Can public servants get involved?

Yes! We’ve been asked this a few times recently and we’ve looked into it and the answer is definitely ‘yes’. Section 6 of the Australian Public Service Code of Conduct makes it clear that public servants are also citizens and members of the community. proACT is a community organisation and being in Canberra, of course we already have a number of public servants involved! Within certain limitations, public servants are allowed to make public comments and to participate in political activities, including joining a party.

Depending on the nature of the public service role, there may be possible perceptions of conflict of interest or partiality to be considered. So, while everyone is able to be actively involved in proACT and efforts towards an Independent Senator for the ACT, if a quieter behind-the-scenes role would be most appropriate, there are still many important contributions to make. And we’re always happy to talk it through.
